The Kenya traditional Maasai, some spelling is Masai, ceremony has no religious connotations. Nor does the Kenyan law recognize the marriage. Imagine you both donning tribal regalia for a communally Kenya traditional wedding ceremony. These ceremonies take place in a small village near the Masai Mara game reserve. And are complete with dances and chanting.

For a large wedding with guests the Kenya traditional ceremony becomes elaborate. A goat is taken to slaughter, and the groom is taken off to drink a locally made beer with the men.

The groom then has to pay the father of the bride a price. A nominal cow will do. And not the several cows the Kenya traditional Maasai tradition asks.

The women from the village take the bride to get ready for the ceremony. And they sing to her all the while.

You can have a white or tan bridal khanga outfit. The outfit includes a marriage necklace with beautiful beads.

Your guests can join the joyful singing, chanting and dancing to accompany the Kenya traditional ceremony.

And then the groom has to prove himself a worthy warrior and husband. He does this by participating in the jumping competition with young warriors known as the morans.

The Kenya traditional ceremony is a public celebration of a commitment in front of others. It has no religious connotations, and the Kenyan law does not legally recognize it.

Visitors usually arrange for a civil marriage at the Kenya government offices. Or have the district commissioner from the nearest town conduct a formal marriage complete with certificates.

If you would like to honeymoon in the area, a private Kenya traditional ceremony can be done. The Bride wears colorfully khanga cloth and a marriage bead necklace. The groom wears shuka cloth for men and he is given a rungu stick to denote his manhood.

These are done by the village elder and one of his wives. For the new husband there is no getting away from the jumping competition event on this occasion.

As part of its Kenya traditional wedding package the safari company arranges for accommodations, and the transportation.

The Kenyan law does not recognize the Kenya traditional Maasai marriage ceremony.
