When Brides and Grooms have chosen their outfits it is time to shop dresses for the Flower Girls.

The Flower Girls’ dresses come in a variety of color combinations. And their designs help to coordinate with the bride’s wedding theme.

The Flower Girls outfits are paid for by their families. And the dress should reflect the lines, styles and tones of the dresses chosen by the Bride and her attendants.

The dress lengths are usually full length formal or three-quarter semi-formal. And she may wear flower ornaments in her hair or a wreath depending on the theme of the wedding.

As girls are growing all the time you may want to make allowance so that she can get more than one wearing out of the dress. The same with the shoes to match. That is unless her outfit is a wedding theme costume.

Wedding Duties for Flower Girls.

In the first place, kids in the wedding party can help the Bride and Groom by being on their best behavior at all times.

And the Orders of the Day for the young wedding party are no tantrums and no tears. Lots of laughs and smiles. But remember, they are just kids!

Young children are part of the Wedding Party because they lend a feeling of innocence to the procession. And needless to say, take cute pictures.

But kids are kids and you have to be prepared for anything to happen!

Traditionally Flower Girls will be carrying a basket with petals or herbs that they will toss in the aisle in front of them. Or they will carry a small bouquet. And some will carry a small bible with a flower and ribbons. Once the Bride has chosen the style, colors and theme of her wedding, she will then decide all her flower requirements.

Choosing The Flower Girls.

The Bride may choose more than one Flower Girl. Sometimes it depends on the size of the wedding. And other times it is because there are several young sisters or cousins.

The Flower Girls often take the place of the bridesmaids. Usually they are under ten-years-old. However, over three-years-old is the suggestion for the Kids in the Wedding Party. But it is the Bride’s choice.

Duties for the Flower Girl & Ring Bearer.

Parents should explain to their children their duties to participate in a Wedding Party.

If a bridesmaid is the parent of a Flower Girl or Ring Bearer they should appoint someone to watch the child.

Whoever is looking after the children should carry a comb. And extra stockings for the Flower Girl, tissues and whatever else might be needed.

Engagement Party.

Upon invitation the Flower Girl and Ring Bearer may attend the engagement party if there is one.

Bridal Showers & Bachelor Parties.

If the Flower Girl receives an invitation to any of the bridal showers she can help by gathering the ribbons from the gifts. And then she gives them to an attendant.

Bridal Luncheon.

Upon invitation the Flower Girls may attend the luncheon hosted by the Bride’s mother. The Flower Girls often attend as their mothers are usually in the Wedding Party.

Rehearsal is important for the Flower Girls and Ring Bearer.

Next to the wedding date the most important date for the Flower Girl and Ring Bearer to attend is the rehearsal. And remember they probably have never done this before. The instructions should be said in a language that the children can understand.

Rehearsal Dinner.

The children in the Wedding Party traditionally do not receive invitations to the Rehearsal Dinner. As it usually starts after 8 p.m.

Flower Girls Petals to toss.

The Flower Girls who are tossing petals in the aisle before the Bride need practice doing this.

For the rehearsal use cut up paper the size of petals or what she is going to be tossing. If the budget allows use some of the real petals. Remember to have someone clean up the rehearsal petals before you leave the area.

Hair.

The Flower Girl’s hair is usually done at the same place as the rest of the Wedding Party. The Bride and Groom will decide if it is in a salon or at the Bride’s home.

Pictures.

The children should know to smile when they see a camera. At today’s weddings they will already know how to take their selfies. The official photographer for the wedding usually organizes the group photographs.

Wedding Ceremony.

• The Flower Girls go to to the ceremony in the car that is planned.

• Checking Props. If the Flower Girl is throwing petals from a basket check the basket and flowers before the Processional.

• The Processional. The Kids in the Wedding Party usually walk in front of the bride. However it depends on the type of service.

• The Ceremony. Depending on the children’s ages and type of service, they can stand with the attendants. Or they can take their place with their parents who are usually sitting in a front row.

• The Recessional. The children walk out behind the Bride and Groom. And this can vary with the type of service it is.

Reception.

• The Receiving Line. The Children in the Wedding Party usually do not participate in the receiving line. But, they may if the request is by the Bride or Groom.

• Seating. The Bride and Groom and attendants usually sit at a head table that faces the guests. The Children in the Wedding Party can sit with their parents, or at a children’s table. And sometimes at the head table if the Wedding Couple would like for them to do so.

• Dancing. After the First Dance ceremonies are over the children can dance with whoever they want. And this includes dancing with the Bride or Groom.
