TORONTO – Great event happening if you have wedding guests during the CNE dates.

New foods are one of the main highlights at the Canadian National Exhibition and this year it’s the same. The 138th edition, known as the CNE, runs from August 19 to Labour Day September 5, 2016. The midway boasts 60 rides, including the new Himalaya.

One of the favorites brought back is The Great Canadian Water Ski Caper. It’ll run daily at the waterfront at 1:30 and 4:30 pm. Plus one show daily at 4:30 pm, September 2-5 during the Air Show and practice day.

The duration of each show is 30 minutes. You will see barefoot skiers attached to the boat by their toes inserted into a rope. In addition to 3-story human pyramids and much more.

This was the first Waterfront Show in 20 years. I photographed each act, some not available 20 years ago, such as a man standing high in the air on a long stream of water, and moving up and down in different directions. When I photographed the water skiing show in 1971, my pictures show Ontario Place as piles of sand in the background and under construction. The entrance of six skiers in a pyramid is always breathtaking.

New foods at the CNE include a chocolate diablo cone, chocolate soft serve coated in cookie crumble, cocoa puffs and wasabi peas, and drizzled with siracha caramel. This is in the Swiss Waffle & Crepes, Food Building.

The Food Building offers a large variety of food choices. I enjoyed my gyros lunch on pita bread bought at my favorite stall. And especially sitting at a picnic table outside the Food Building at the north end.

Pulled Pork Cinnamon Rolls. A marriage of tender pulled pork rolled into a soft warm cinnamon bun and drizzled with frosting. It’s at Howie’s Cinnamon Rolls, on the Midway.

The CNE’s annual Ribfest is happening daily at Bandshell Park. And to go with it, the Craft Beer Fest & Food Truck Frenzy, August 26-28. This features 26 trucks offering global fare and six new food trucks making their CNE debut.

There is no admission into the Ricoh Centre where the Aerial Acrobatic and Ice Skating Shows perform. 2010 Olympic bronze medalist skater Joannie Rochiette appears from August 19 to 22, and also from August 26 to September 5. Special guest Elvis Stojko appears on August 23 to 25. As always this show is entertaining, and most of all, the arena was cool on a hot day.

The CNE fair aired the live broadcast of “CBC and The Tragically Hip present The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration” on Saturday, August 20th, on the CNE Bandshell. To the delight of thousands of spectators and music fans alike. Ontario’s beloved group, The Tragically Hip, embarked on a sold-out celebration last tour across Canada, which culminate in their hometown of Kingston, ON.

CNE Bandshell Concert Series lineup, Ricky Nelson Remembered August 23, 7:30 pm, Luciano, August 24, 7:30 pm, Scott Helman & Tyler Shaw August 30, 7:30 pm, and much more.

Kid’s World at the west end of the grounds features Pizza Nova Pizza Making, an Art Studio as well as rides for the kids.

Rock & Roll Over President’s Choice Super Dog Show in the Encare Centre at the east end of the grounds.

I enjoyed watching the Nova Scotia dancers and the Croatian choir on the International Stage in the large Encare centre. In addition to the many other exhibits throughout the building to explore.

The Better Living Centre features 140 farm animals including cow milking demonstrations. Also, a chance to revisit the farmer at his alpaca exhibit, and learn more about his animals. Such as the alpaca is in the llama family. Did you know llamas, alpacas and camels have no top teeth, have 3 stomachs and chew their cud? The farmer at his exhibit always gives me new information about alpacas, in addition to what their wool can be used fore.

The 67th Annual Canadian International Air Show on Labour Day features the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, CF-19 Hornet and many more.

Tickets for the CNE August 19 to September 5, 2016.

General Admission (14-64) $18.00.
Adults 65 and Better $15.00.

I especially enjoy the many flower displays throughout the grounds, especially around the fountain. It is put on by the Parks and Recreation people.

Suggest as you enter the grounds, pick up a flyer listing Today’s Highlights. I found the information in the flyer very helpful in planning my day.

Enjoy your visit to the EX.
