Valentine Wines

Sweet Wines & Romantic Drink Recipes

by Shelley Waugh
Along with chocolates and flowers, Valentine's Day is worthy of something special - perhaps a delicious dessert, perhaps delicious, sweet wines to go with that dessert.

The Essensia Sparkler - aperitif (pictured left)
This delicious and unique aperitif features the flavors of Quady Essensia and Deviation added to sparkling wine. The combination makes a mysteriously aromatic and romantic beginning to the Valentine day dinner.
• Pour 3 oz chilled sparkling wine into a flute glass
• Add 1 oz chilled Essensia
• 1 oz chilled Deviation
• 1 tsp grenadine syrup
Garnish with maraschino cherry or strawberry

The Elysium Sparkler - aperitif
This delightful aperitif features an eye catching brilliantly translucent red hue with succulent red fruit flavors and mysterious aromatics. It will surely set the tone for the romantic dinner to follow.
• Pour 3 oz chilled sparkling wine into a flute glass.
• Add 1 oz chilled Elysium
• 1 oz chilled Deviation
Garnish with ½ blood orange slice

Three's Company - digestif
This ruby colored digestif or dessert wine leaves a romantic flavor of citrus and pomegranate with a delicate hint of rose. Truly lovely as a digestif or dessert wine:
• Pour 2 oz Elysium
• 1 oz Essensia
• ½ oz Deviation
a dash of Angostura into a brandy snifter. Accompanies rich chocolate desserts.

Essensia is made from Orange Muscat grapes (known in Italy as Orange Blossom Muscat), a delicious accompaniment to desserts, especially chocolate and those containing almonds, peaches, apples or apricots. With sparkling water, Essensia makes a refreshing spritzer; with sparking wine you have an Essensia Royale.
Suggested retail price is: US$12 - $14 (375 ml), US$24 (750 ml).

Elysium, pictured left, is made from the Black Muscat grape with a rose and litchi scent and especially appropriate for Valentine's with the heart on the label. It is perhaps the best accompaniment for dark chocolate dessert. A bottle of Elysium, a red ribbon and the finest chocolate dessert you can find.
Suggested retail price is: $12 - $14 (375 ml), $24 (750 ml).

Quady's Batch 88 Starboard is, yes, Port. But, of course, it can't be "Port" because that comes from a place in Portugal, the Douro River Valley. Since "starboard" (right) is the opposite nautical direction to port (left) that's how it got its name. The grapes in this world-class port are primarily Tinta Roriz from the Madera, CA area, a blend of several vintages, 190 proof neutral grape spirits (instead of the usual 140 proof fortifying brandy) and then aged, on average, five years. Superb for those who love a great, after-dinner Port.
Suggested retail price: $25 (750 ml).

Red Electra is a yummy wine with only 5% alcohol. It has a pretty red color, tastes grapy and sweet, and has a tangy sparkly feel. It's a good wine for angels to drink when they party because with only 5% alcohol, they can party longer.
Suggested retail price: US$12 - $14 (375 ml)
