Helmet-mounted cameras the rage
Video camera ski goggles
One of the products shown at the outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City was helmet-mounted cameras, left, that are all the rage on the slopes these days, and at least one company is trying to bring that energy down to eye level.
One of the best skiing safety tips is really a matter of personal choice - to wear, or not to wear, a helmet. Be sure to wear ski goggles that fit properly around your helmet.
Liquid Image recently unveiled their Summit Series – a line of ski goggles with a high-definition 1080p camera mounted inside. The goggles have 32 gigabytes of memory and can be plugged into your computer’s USB port, allowing you to share your sickest tricks on the slopes exactly as you saw them. The company also makes goggles for off-road bikers and scuba divers.

Badrutt's Palace Hotel, the cradle of winter sports
St. Moritz, Switzerland
The Cresta Run in St Moritz is legendary, but if you get cold feet at the thought of such high drama, you can watch polo, cricket or horse racing ice as the Lake St Moritz freezes all winter long – that is also the raison d’être for much of the winter entertainment.
Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is located in one of the most challenging ski areas in the world and offers a host of winter activities. The hotel has 135 guestrooms including 35 suites with views of the Swiss Alps and is open this winter from December 1, 2011 - April 9, 2012. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Swiss Deluxe Hotels and Swiss Historic Hotels.
January events in St Moritz this winter include:
January 54th Concours Hippique St Moritz: January 15-22, 2012 St Moritz welcomes around 120 horses and riders to compete in show jumping on snow. Bobsleigh and Skeleton European and World Championships: January 16-22 The birth place of the sports of bobsleigh and skeleton, St Moritz is the only natural (non-refrigerated) track that hosts international competition. Host to the 1928 and 1948 Olympic Winter Games, the start is located in St. Moritz and winds over 1,700 meters to the finish in Celerina. St Moritz has hosted the FIBT World Champion a record 17 times. The run is popular with guests for rides outside Championship dates.

Top ski destinations to match skill levels
Ski Resorts Around the World
If you are revving up for some downhill action this season. Whether you prefer the calm and ease of the bunny slopes or the adrenaline rush of black diamond runs, here's a list of ski resorts around the world that offers something to match your skill level.
Best for beginners
• Killington, Vermont, USA - Of Killington’s 140 trails, there’s a fairly even spread of levels. Trails deemed easy account for 34 per cent with intermediate and advanced accounting for the remaining two thirds, giving you something to aim toward on successive trips.
Best for intermediates
• Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Alberta, Canada - Banff National Park turns into a Winter Wonderland this time of year when skiers come in search of champagne powder. The resort sits between the lofty peaks of Mount Richardson, Ptarmigan Peak, Pika Peak and Redoubt Mountain. Banff National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage.
Best for advanced
• Red Mountain, British Columbia, Canada - Deep in the Kootenay Mountains of British Columbia lies Red Mountain, a resort with backwoods charm that is praised as among the best resorts in North America. Ski Canada Magazine rated it best for “Steeps”, “Powder” and “Trees”. There are nearly 90 runs stretched across two mountains; 1,700 skiable acres and 880 metres of vertical terrain.
• Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA - In the Grand Tetons two mountains - Rendezvous and Apres Vous – serve up the big, big skiing. Most of the advanced trails line the slopes of Rendezvous Mountain while Apres Vous Mountain hosts the beginners and intermediates.
The iconic slope is Corbet’s Couloir where intrepid skiers enjoy free falling onto a 55-degree slope. Should you not turn hard right immediately, you’ll face plant onto rock. Turn hard right immediately and, after two fast turns, you’ll exit down a 45-degree slope.
The all-rounder
• Val d'Isere, France - Without a doubt, the best skiing – for all levels – is to be found at Val d'Isere. This French resort is high up in the Espace Killy, a snowy locale that includes Tignes too.
Its features are impeccable: 300km of piste, 10,000 hectares of off-piste, two glaciers, a vertical drop of almost 2,000m and 100 lifts that means there is rarely any lines or congestion. Due to its topography, Val d'Isere is snow-sure, getting early snow and occasionally continuing well into May.
Rounding out the list are Obergurgl, Austria (for beginners); La Plagne/Les Arcs, France, and Saalbach, Austria (for intermediates); and La Grave, France (for advanced).
