There is something special about fall and the turning of the leaves that is one of the most romantic times of the year and when it feels right to getaway to watch the turning of the leaves.
USA
Augusta, Maine
More foliage colors are beginning to show in northern Maine, according to the second 2011 fall foliage report from the Maine Department of Conservation (MDOC), see state map left.
The MDOC also announced nine additional ranger-led weekend foliage tours happening at state parks from Freeport to Weld to Eastport through Oct. 23. Visit
www.parksandlands.com
for information about each event or go to
www.visitmaine.com
, for more information about fall activities and events in Maine.
Massachusetts
Enjoy the beautiful autumn colors when you drive or cycle along the back roads and bike paths in many Massachusetts communities from Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Boston and Nantucket to the Berkshires.
Visit the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) at

Western Massachusetts

The Pocono Mountains, PA
Besides being home to more than 35 golf courses, the Pocono Mountains has long been known for its fall foliage, natural beauty, numerous lakes, parks and other environmental wonderlands that are found throughout the four-county region.
Autumn’s spectacular hues spread across tree canopies in the Mountains’ three distinct color zones. The peak colors in each zone are projected to be October 8 (Northern), October 12 (Southern) and October 15 (Central).
There are several value-laden deals and activities available this fall that you can check out at

Traverse City, MI
Fall color is appearing across northern Michigan – and the past summer’s warm temperatures and plentiful moisture should ensure that it will be one of the best ever.
On the hillsides overlooking Grand Traverse Bay, you’ll now see a sudden burst of orange or scarlet among the green stands of oak, maple and pine. Here and there, the mounds of sumac are touched with deep smouldering crimson, while the orchards and vineyards of the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas are filled with brightly colored apples and thick clusters of dark purple grapes. In a matter of weeks, the entire region will be aflame with sheets of red, orange and gold.
Locations all throughout the Traverse City area are teaming up for the Fab Fall Special to bring you closer to the Fall colors. Restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues and are offering discounts this season, ranging from 10-50% off normal prices.
Since fall colors can “peak” fairly quickly, the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau is providing visitors with up-to-date information on its Fall Foliage Web Page at
www.traversecity.com
, visitors can receive updated reports on the progress of the annual fall display, including areas where the best colors can be found. The site also contains itineraries for several great fall color touring routes.
Atlantic Canada
The four Atlantic Canada provinces – New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island come alive in a wash of fiery crimsons and scarlets along with bright yellows and golds, and food and music take center stage at colorful festivals.
The days are longer the further north you travel and more daylight delays the process of the leaves changing color. The temperatures are perfect for hiking and camping, and it’s the best time for whale watching. The web sites for New Brunswick Tourism and Parks and Nova Scotia Tourism have fall foliage sections with maps and blogs highlighting the best viewing spots.
New Brunswick
Three quarters of the province is covered with evergreens, maples, beech, elm and red oak. Along the Acadian Coast around Charlo, the panorama takes in Chaleur Bay, one of the continent’s most beautiful, the Acadian Forest and the Appalachian Mountain Range. On nearby Lameque Island, the Ecological Park of the Acadian Peninsula offers some excellent walking trails while on the scenic island of Miscou, the area around the 1856 lighthouse turns brilliant red thanks to the acres of peat bogs.
Newfoundland and Labrador
The west coast of Newfoundland is particularly colorful in the fall. At Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, visitors can hike 62 miles of trails in the almost 700-square-mile Tablelands Park. Some of the highest waterfalls in eastern North America are here along with sandy beaches and remote fishing villages.
The Humber Valley Resort is in a forest between Deer Lake and the Humber River on the northernmost slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. A “His and Her Luxury Getaway” includes two nights at the 4 ½ star inn with breakfast, a round of golf and an voucher for the Elements Spa. For rates visit
www.innathumbervalley.com
.
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia is the northern boundary for large stands of red and orange maples, brilliant gold birch, subtle yellow marshes and tawny brown chestnut trees and because the province sits at an almost north-south angle, leaf peeping spans up to six weeks that started in late September into early October around Bear River and Kejimkujik National Park and continues on in early to late October on Cape Breton island (at the tip of Nova Scotia) around the upper part of the Cabot Trail.
The award-winning Chanterelle Country Inn & Cottages lies on 150 acres along the Cabot Trail overlooking the estuary of North River. For rates visit
www.chanterelleinn.com
The Nova Scotia Fall Wine Festival to October 16 offers more than 45 tastings, grape stomps, gourmet dinners, cooking classes and food pairing events across the province,
www.winesofnovascotia.ca
.
On Cape Breton, the Celtic Colours International Festival, October 7 to 15, explores its Cajun and Appalachian connections featuring 250 events and 45 concerts in 33 communities around the island. This year’s artists in residence Ron Bourgeois, a Cape Breton singer and songwriter and American fiddler and guitarist Bruce Molsky will perform along with musicians from Ireland, Scotland and Louisiana. Visit
www.celtic-colours.com
.
Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province, is ablaze in color in all five of its distinctive regions.
If you would like to visit the Green Gables Shores like Kate and William did on their recent Royal Visit, you’ll soak in the lore of
Anne of Green Gables
(Kate’s favorite book). Several packages make it easy with passes to author Lucy Maude Montgomery’s Birthplace and her Homestead, the Anne of Green Gables House and the Museum as well as the re-creation of Avonlea Village. For the “Experience the Land of Anne’” package at the Resort at Cavendish Corner visit
