| SPIRITS Hendricks Gin
Hendrick’s Gin is for a discerning taste…
By Natasha Slinko
Xavier Padovani, left, was born and bred in France, is both charming and knowledgeable about spirits overall but excels as the spokesman and Global Brand Ambassador for Hendrick’s Gin, a creation of William Grant & Son, which nestled in the hills of Scotland has been in operation since 1887. They are also one of the few remaining independent family distilleries.
What makes Hendrick’s Gin so exceptional in taste is their unique distillation process. Most distillers use one still whereas William Grant & Son uses two stills, one of which is a Carterhead Still from the 19th Century (there are now only four left in the world). Each one of the stills separately processes the two main ingredients/flavours of the gin – rose pedals and cucumbers. These are then combined with 11 botanicals alcohol and the fermentation process begins. What also makes the gin unique is that this family distillery makes two-three small batches of only 450 – 500 litres a week, whereas their competitors are making almost 7000 litre batches at a time.
Xavier has hosted numerous weddings and one wedding creation is the a light drizzle of the gin to Spoon Canapés with a complimentary to the flavours of the appetizers. I asked Xavier one of his favourite creations. The list of the ingredients was longer than most shopping lists and more complex than a soufflé. Imagine combining the gin, Orangeflower water drops, single cream, lemon, sugar, eggwhite (yes, I said eggwhites), elderflower liquor etc…. That was for one drink but I am sure it would be a delight.
Xavier openly says that “Hendrick’s Gin is not for everyone”… but I say it is definitely for those with a discerning taste and palate. Enjoy it as a Bloody Caesar, Dirty Martini, Gin and Tonic, pictured left, Signature Drinks like The Gaelic Splash, pictured above, or straight up on the rocks…..it definitely is worth the taste. Hendrick’s Gin comes in a 750ml bottle, retailing at $40.15. Visit
