Royals attend Zara & Mike's wedding

Mike Tindall and Zara Phillips leaving the church

EDINBURGH, Scotland - On July 30, 2011, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were among the royal guests who attended the Queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips, 30, and England rugby Captain, Mike Tindall, 32, private wedding ceremony at Canongate Kirk on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Zara arrived at the 17th century church at 3:05 pm in a black Bentley, accompanied by her father, Captain Mark Phillips, pictured left.

As she stepped from the car and waved, smiling, to cheers and warm applause from the crowd of 6,000 the bride showed her ivory silk faille and silk duchesse satin gown by Stewart Parvin, a couturier to both the Queen and the Princess Royal. The dress was designed to create a bell-shaped silhouette and featured a chevron-pleated bodice, a dropped waist, which concealed a corset, flowed into a full skirt with hidden pockets, with a "cathedral-length" bouffant style with a short blusher veil. Fabric-covered buttons ran down the back of the gown from the neckline to the hem.

She wore a Greek Key diamond tiara loaned to her by her mother, the Princess Royal which was once owned by Princess Alice of Battenburg, the mother of Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Her shoes were by Jimmy Choo. Her bouquet was by Paul Thomas.

Her natural make-up look was from Bobbi Brown. Her hair was worn in a swept-up chignon, styled by Evangelos Tsaipkinis, of the Mayfair salon Michael John.

The bride was accompanied by her maid of honour, the horse trainer Dolly Maude, whose six-year-old son Ted, six, Miss Phillips' godson, acted as page boy. The bridesmaids were Stephanie Phillips, Miss Phillips's half-sister, the daughter of Captain Mark Phillips and his second wife Sandy Pflueger, Nell Maude, Jaz Jocelyn and Hope Balshaw. All wore dresses by Sue Palmer, a local dressmaker.

The groom arrived at the Kirk at 1.45pm, with Peter Phillips, Miss Phillips older brother, who acted as an usher. His best man was Iain Balshaw, 32, his former Gloucester and England team-mate, and his groomsman, was James Simpson-Daniel, 28, an England team-mate.

The groom, best-man and ushers wore black morning suits with spongebag trousers, by the bespoke London tailors, Cad & the Dandy, made with black "barathea" cloth sourced from Huddersfield, in a nod to the Tindalls' Yorkshire roots. They also sported white carnation buttonholes and shiny Oxford shoes.

The bride and groom were joined by over 400 guests at the Kirk, which was decorated with white stargazer lilies, roses and carnations, and beech and box trees. The guests were piped into the Kirk by Derek Potter, the Queen's pipe major.

The Queen wore a Stewart Parvin apricot wool coat and matching silk patterned dress, accessorised with a matching straw hat by the royal milliner Rachel Trevor-Morgan,

Mother of the bride, the Princess Royal, attended with her husband, Commander Timothy Laurence, wore a rose pink skirt and embroidered cream jacket and a typically understated fascinator.

The Duchess of Cambridge, left, wore a fitted butterscotch skirt and matching jacket by Alexander McQueen that she wore to a wedding she attended in 2006 - with a large disc-shaped fascinator.

The Duchess of Cornwall chose a peppermint pleated dress, worn under a fitted jacket with an elaborate floral headdress.

The wedding service was conducted by the Rev Neil Gardner, the Queen's personal chaplain in Scotland. Canongate is the parish church for Holyroodhouse. The Gordounstoun choir performed during the service, singing Amazing Grace and two psalms. Miss Phillips vowed to "honour" her groom rather than "obey" when she exchanged her marriage vows.

The Royal wedding guests also included the Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Charles, Prince Harry, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Lady Sarah Chatto and her husband Daniel

The groom's guests included his father, Phil, 65, a retired Barclays Bank worker, and his mother Linda, 63, a social worker and elder brother, Ian, 36. Also present was Mr Tindall's uncle Stuart, and his wife Paula, who together with their daughters Sarah, 18, and Kathryn, 15, perform as the folk band "The Tindalls".

Wedding guests included sports stars including Jackie Stewart, the former racing driver and Miss Phillips' godfather, who wore a bold blue, green and red kilt and blue navy jacket, and England rugby stars. The female guests, were dressed in a wide range of styles and bright colours, included actress Katherine Kelly (Coronation St).

Canadian connection
Margaret Kittle, 76, camped out overnight after travelling 4,000 miles from her home in Ontario to catch a glimpse of the wedding party. She told a reporter, "I've been hooked on the Royal family since my parents took me to see George VI and the Queen Mother when I was four. I've seen every wedding since Princess Anne and Mark Phillips."

After the service
The bride and groom emerged from the Kirk smiling and waving, before exchanging a kiss under the archway to cheers from the crowds. A Bentley drove them back to the Palace of Holyroodhouse 360 yards away.

The Royal wedding guests were also driven back to the Palace in a fleet of Bentleys and Jaguars, greeted by a group of pipers at the gates of Holyrood, while the rest of the wedding party followed in coaches for an afternoon reception of drinks and canapés, followed by dinner and dancing.

The Queen's wedding gift for the couple was the cost of the reception. She stayed only for drinks before leaving the guests to carry on partying, just as she had for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding.

Zara spent her final night as a single woman partying on the Royal Yacht Britannia with younger guests and stayed at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official Scottish residence.

The couple had chosen to marry in Edinburgh because of Miss Phillips' strong connections to Scotland – she attended Gordounstoun School in Morayshire and spent many holidays at Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish estate.

The church
The Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh’s Old Town, is where the Queen worships when in residence at Holyrood. Founded in 1688 and completed in 1691, Canongate Kirk is also the parish church for the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh Castle.

Princess Anne married her second husband Commander Timothy Laurence in a private ceremony at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral, in 1992. Zara’s nuptials are the first Royal wedding there since her mother's.

Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips is the second child and only daughter of Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips and is thirteenth in the line of succession to the throne. At the request of their mother, the children of the Princess Royal do not hold any royal or noble title, nor are they automatically entitled to royal status by right of birth, as they are the grandchildren of a monarch in the female line.

No traditional honeymoon for newlyweds
The bride and groom have decided to forego the traditional post-wedding honeymoon, and return to their respective day jobs. Mike Tindall is in training for his next international match, an England v Wales friendly on August 6 at Twickenham. Miss Phillips is preparing for the Blenheim Palace and Gatcombe International horse trials in September. She has decided to keep her maiden name because of her success as a world champion equestrian.

Wedding Announcement
In London, on March 9, 2011, a simple statement was issued by the press secretary to Queen Elizabeth, Zara's grandmother, "Miss Zara Phillips and Mr. Mike Tindall will be married at the Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh, on Saturday, 30th July, and on behalf of Phillips's parents, Zara's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and the Duke of Edinburgh they are delighted with the news."

No Hello! wedding spread for Zara
Buckingham Palace turned down Zara Phillips request for her and her then fiancé Mike Tyndall to sell their wedding photos to Hello!

Zara, 29, is 13th in line to the throne has no royal title and does not take any money from the public purse.
Tindall, 32, both pictured right, is a rugby player who plays Outside centre for Gloucester Rugby and is the current captain of the England team.

Phillips and Tindall informed their families of the news shortly after she accepted his proposal at their home last December. The ring is described as a single solitaire diamond with pavé set diamonds on a split shank, set on a platinum band was designed by Tindall.

Phillips is former Eventing World Champion (World Equestrian Games) and often seen in casual sports gear - but she can glam-up when the occasion calls for it. At her cousin William's wedding to Kate Middleton, she wore a silvery grey coat dress by Dublin-born designer Paul Costelloe and a black hat by Philip Treacy.
Tindall wore a traditional morning suit and matched his tie to Zara's outfit, picture above left; and when she was a bridesmaid in a Vera Wang dress at her brother Peter's wedding to Autumn Kelly in 2008, pictured right with her cousin Prince Harry.
