The Engagement & Invitation
November 16, 2010
Engagement Photographs
Two official photographs were chosen by William and Kate to mark their engagement. The photos were taken by fashion and portrait Peruvian-born photographer, Mario Testino, a good friend of Princess Diana and her favourite photographer.
The first is a casual photo, shown left, taken in the Cornwall Room in St James Palace that shows William embracing Kate. Middleton is wearing jeans and a white Whistles blouse while the prince wears jeans, a white Turnbull & Asser shirt, and a brown Brunello Cucinelli jumper supplied by the photographer.
The second photo, right, is a more formal shot taken in St James's Palace council chamber, which has walls hung with paintings of some of William's illustrious ancestors, and the engagement ring is clearly visible on the bride-to-be's hand. The prince is in a suit, shirt and tie from royal outfitters Turnbull & Asser. Middleton wears a white Reiss dress with just a single pearl earring visible.
Proposal
Prince William, 28, and his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, 28, became engaged in October during a private holiday in Kenya. The prince informed The Queen and other close members of his family and he sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father.
The official announcement was released on November 16 from Prince Charles' Clarence House office as follows: The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton on

Prince William gave Kate the engagement ring
his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, received from his father, Prince Charles.
Kate, pictured left, is wearing the 18 carats oval blue sapphire engagement ring surrounded by 14 small diamonds in an cluster, during greeting the media with William on November 16th.
Westminster Abbey has hosted its share of Royal events: both Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother were wed there; the stately monument was also the site of Princess Diana's 1997 funeral.
Downing Street has also announced that the Cabinet has agreed that a public holiday will be held on the day of Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton. The costs of the wedding itself will be met by the Royal Household, with Government meeting any wider security or transport related costs.
Following the marriage, the couple will live in north Wales, where Prince William will continue to serve with the Royal Air Force. The couple met more than eight years ago while students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

and Canada's Prime Minister
Stephen Harper
and his wife, Laureen, have received their invitations to the wedding and to a lunchtime buffet for 600 people hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.
One of William's godfathers,
King Constantine
, the former ruler of Greece, his wife Queen Anne-Marie and their son Crown Prince Pavlos are confirmed to be attending.
On February 16th & 17th, the stiff white card invitation with its gold lettering and gilded edge went out to 1,900 people, from kings to charity leaders, to close family and university friends, old schoolmates and prime ministers around the world.
Decorated in gold writing and emblazed with a matching insignia of William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, in whose name the invitation is sent, right, the edges of the card – which is about 10x6 inches – are bevelled and then gilded. The simple wording reads that the Lord Chamberlain has been "commanded by the Queen" to invite the holder to the marriage at Westminster Abbey at 11 a.m. on April 29. As for the dress code, gentlemen guests are asked to wear military uniform, a tailcoat or a business suit.
Six-hundred of the 1,900 guests also received an invited by the Queen to a reception that she is hosting immediately after the ceremony in the Abbey. Later, around 300 of those 600 guests are invited to a dinner hosted by William's father, Prince Charles, in the evening at Buckingham Palace.
