William & Kate's Wedding Gift Charity Fund Raises $1.7 Million

Canadian charity, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) is on charity list

Thursday June 23, 2011

Prince William and Kate Middleton set up Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund so that anyone who wished to send them a wedding gift could instead donate to the couple's chosen charities.

Buckingham Palace has released that the fund has a grand total of £1,058,367 – or $1,706,828. The funds included direct donations, as well as revenue raised from wedding-related projects that included a donation by Decca Records from sales of the official Royal Wedding Album, and a donation made by photographer Mario Testino's office from sales of the photograph of the royal couple printed in the official wedding brochure.

The 26 charities that will benefit from the fund were grouped into particular areas: Changing Lives through Arts and Sport; Children Fulfilling Their Potential; Help and Care at Home; Support for Service Personnel and Their Families; and Conservation for Future Generations.
The funds will be distributed among the charities by the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry.

The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA)
The Auxiliary is a nonprofit organization and a registered charity made up of 4,300 volunteer members throughout Canada. It has been in existence since 1978 and provides assistance to the Coast Guard and the National Defense with search and rescue and safe boating programs.

The inclusion of the Auxiliary is a major coup for the group, especially since no member of the royal family has been associated with the organization. But President Malcom Dunderdale speculates the Prince's work as an RA Sea King rescue helicopter pilot might have had something to do with their selection. The Auxiliary Coast Guard also works with helicopters.

Prior to their wedding on April 29th, 2011, Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton created a charitable gift fund to help celebrate their wedding. The fund will focus on assisting charities which support the five causes chosen by the couple. These causes are close to their hearts and reflect the experiences, passions and values of their lives so far. Having been touched by the goodwill shown to them since their engagement, they asked that anyone wishing to send them a wedding gift consider doing so in the form of a donation to the fund.

Charity gift from George Michael
April 15, 2011

You and I wedding song gift
While a guest on CNN with Piers Morgan in April, singer George Michael, left, revealed his gift to Prince William and Kate Middleton: a cover of Stevie Wonder's 1972 song "You and I," who said recording the song marked the best two days of work of my life.

The pop superstar, who was close friends with the prince's late mother Princess Diana also told Piers, "I am absolutely sure Diana would have loved the whole thing. I really hope she would have loved this track.

Michael hopes his free-to-download cover version is a hit among his fans and those who want a musical keepsake of the wedding - because then they'll donate to William and Kate's royal charity fund which is where they've asked people to give money rather than send presents. Michael revealed that Stevie Wonder has also made sure the song is a big charity earner - he has waived the rights to the song until "way after the wedding".

Michael has not been invited to the wedding and makes it clear to his Twitter followers that he's not angling for an invite. He added: "I want Will and Kate to know that this a genuine gift, not a promo exercise.

The free song was downloaded here from Michael's website.
