Diana's spare wedding gown didn't have the signature lace

notes by Joyce Barslow
For the first time designer Elizabeth Emmanuel of Elizabeth and David Emmanuel designs who created both of Diana's wedding gowns is sharing the backup wedding dress in case the first was leaked to the media in advance of the wedding.
When Princess Diana walked down the aisle in 1981, the world was anxiously waiting to see what sort of fairy tale dress she would wear. "At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise," said Emmanuel. "Had the secret of the real dress got out it's possible that Diana would actually have worn the backup ivory silk taffeta gown, bearing the same ruffles around the neck as the original but without the signature lace.
The dress was created in case of emergency, but was never completely finished.
"We didn't try it on Diana. We never even discussed it," said Emmanuel. "We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really."
Emmanuel adds now that she can sympathize with whomever is designing Kate Middleton's dress for her big day with Prince William. "They're keeping quiet on the designer this time, probably to avoid all the hassle that we had," she said. "It was really difficult and we didn't have to contend with cameras in phones like you have today. How do you keep something secret like that? I have no idea."
Diana's wedding dress that she wore, seen by over 700 million people worldwide, was made of ivory silk, pure taffeta and antique lace, with 10,000 pearls and sequins, and had a 25 ft train.

Elizabeth established her reputation as a world-class fashion designer in 1981 when she and her then husband were chosen by HRH Diana Princess of Wales to design her wedding gown. David is credited for actually designing Diana's wedding dress. They divorced in 1990.
