Michelle Obama's Fashion Highlights

Wedding Album photos from Michelle & Barack Obama's wedding

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 25, 2009 ... In celebration of the India-theme first official state dinner to honour the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Mrs. Gursharan Kaur, the U.S. First Lady, Michelle Obama turned heads when she entered the room on the arm of her husband, President Obama, left, in a one-of-a-kind handmade gold strapless gown with sterling silver-plated appliqués by New York designer, Naeem Khan, who was born in India.

The gown silhouette is very modern and very simple, but the fabric is totally handmade. It’s chiffon with paillettes on it that are sterling silver which were hand sewn in various sizes. This is something the maharajas and royal families in India used to use for most of their clothing. Khan designed the dress so it’s clean at the bottom but has enough flair so there’s a lot of movement.

The gown was accessorized with oversized earrings, bangle bracelets and a cream-colored wrap.

It took about 40 people more than four weeks to make the dress. All the embroidery was made in Khan's father’s workshop in India. The cutting and sewing was done at Khan's New York studio. His dresses retail from US$5,000 to US$15,000. For a dress that was made especially for the First Lady, Khan feels the cost is priceless as it could end up in the Smithsonian.

The grandson of a textile entrepreneur who specializes in elaborate embroidery, Khan, moved to the U.S. to attend school when he was 20, and later became an assistant for the late celebrity fashion designer Halston before opening his own studio. Visit www.naeemkhan.com.

OUTFIT IDEAS FOR WEDDINGS

January 20, 2009 - For President Barack Obama's swearing in ceremony Michelle Obama wore a lemongrass yellow crystal studded dress, and a matching yellow-gold Swiss wool coat with French silk lining with silver lace overlay.

A golden scarf draped across her neck, and a lightweight sweater tied with a matching ribbon that was worn under the coat. She wore low-heeled shoes by
Jimmy Choo and olive green gloves from the J. Crew catalogue. The outfit was by Cuban-born New York designer Isabel Toledo, a former creative director for Anne Klein.

For the evening celebrations on January 20, 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama wore a $3,500 (U.S.) white and ivory one-shouldered floor-length raw silk chiffon and organza gown embellished with Swarovski crystals, left, and hand-embroidered rosettes from top to bottom. The dress was created by Taiwan-born New York designer Jason Wu, who stated that "I wanted the dress to look like a sign of hope."

Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, wore a red strapless chiffon gown by New York designer Reem Acra, right, at the Inaugural celebration balls.

Her accessories were a thin bracelet, long earrings and metallic strappy sandals.

The Obama Wedding

Michelle & Barack Obama were married in Chicago at the Trinity United Church of Christ on October 18, 1992. She wore an off-shoulder sweetheart neckline white wedding gown with a long train that had detailing with intricate floral applique embellishments, and a princess-length veil.
