Getting a marriage licence

How to get a marriage licence

reporting by Shelley Waugh

Every city or town has a licence bureau in their City Hall where you can either go in person to pick up an application or have it sent to you in the  mail, or download it from their website.

There is a minimum age to marry under the authority of the publication of banns without parental consent. If you are under the minimum age you have to have the consent n writing of your parents or guardian. Other restrictions may also apply.

First you need a marriage licence
To be married you must fill out a marriage licence application form in the city/town where you are getting married.

If it's a destination wedding, make sure you a marriage licence application and other documentation requirements for that location.

Once you have filled out the application, apply for the marriage licence in person. Make sure you and your partner bring identification, such as a birth certificate (along with any change of name certificates), current passport, Record of Immigrant Landing or Canadian citizenship card, along with photo identification to prove your current legal name and age.

There is a fee for purchasing a marriage licence that is valid from the date of purchase. If the licence expires, it will not be valid and you will have to purchase another licence.

Marriage Licence Application form in pdf format and text versions are usually available on the city/town websites.

Obtaining a Marriage Certificate
Immediately after the marriage ceremony, the couple may receive a Record of Solemnization of Marriage from the person who performed the ceremony.

This document includes the couple's names, the date of the marriage, the names of the witnesses and whether the marriage was performed under the authority of a licence or the publication of banns. This is not a marriage certificate or a legal record.

The person who performed the marriage must forward the completed and signed marriage licence to an Office of the Registrar General for registration.

Note: The marriage must be registered before you may apply for a marriage certificate. There are several different ways to obtain a Marriage Certificate. This includes applications made online, mailed, faxed or in person.

Check where you obtained your marriage licence if there is a fee and for further information.
