Leap Year 2012
updates by Shelley Waugh
Leapin' Lizards, Ladies! It's Pop-the-question Year
Victoria Falls in Africa, one of the seven wonders of the natural world, is famous as a classically romantic spot.
If your significant other has been dragging his feet, making excuses or changing the subject, take charge and pop the question on February 29th, a date that comes only once every four years. (According to the time-honored tradition, in the British Isles, the U.S. and in countries around the world, this is the day when it’s legit for the woman to propose.)
Get some ideas from five romantic places to propose in Southern Africa that are romantic, original, personal and private places to go down on bended knee:
1. Since no little blue box has been proffered, get your own quality sparkler in Botswana. Then head with your fellow to Okavango Delta and stay at Jao Camp, which is described as “one of the lushest, greenest, most tropical and watery areas of the Delta.” Each of its nine rooms has its own outdoor ‘sala’ (an open-air bed under a roof), a great spot to spend a lazy afternoon and weasel an “I do” out of him.
2. Even in the middle of the wild, you’re seldom alone at safari camps. However, on “bush night” you two sweethearts can be the only guests at Beho Beho, a tiny, super-luxurious fly-camp set up in the heart of Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve. After a private safari with your top-notch guide, a hot shower, sundowners and a first-class dinner, you can have the good folks at Beho Beho set up complete privacy for the betrothing.
3. Expert Africa can arrange for lovebirds to enjoy a private dinner on a dune of the Namib Desert. One couple recently did so, and the proposal was made -- once the geckos stopped barking. Stay at the charming and intimate Wolwedans Dune Camp, located on the edge of a 750-foot-high dune. Sleep out under the stars after his heavenly agreement to tie the knot.
4. Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the natural world, is famous as a classically romantic spot. Nearby, is one of the dreamiest ever places to stay, Tongabezi Lodge. Savor a sumptuous candlelit dinner on a private sampan floating in the beautiful Zambezi River. Your waiter will ferry the courses to you via canoe. On the shimmery water, under a moonlit sky, after a satisfying spread, it’ll be a cinch to get your hold-out to take the plunge (not into the river).
5. A low-key place is the Pole Pole on Tanzania’s Mafia Island, where on “Sandbank Days,” you can sail in a traditional dhow to one of the sandbanks uncovered by the tide, an offer you can’t refuse. A turquoise-blue Indian Ocean is wrapped 360° around you. After the boatman barbeques freshly-caught fish for lunch, snorkel to the coral reef or just wade into the shallows, kneel down and ask for his hand in marriage!

Here's a list of five most unusual situations to pop the question.
While riding a magic carpet on Mount Washington, BC
Lacking a genie to grant you that one wish of living happily ever after? Go for the next best thing and head to the snowy slopes of Mount Washington Alpine Resort, located just 25 km (15.5 miles) outside of Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, and pop the question while riding a magic carpet. No, really.
The goal of the resort’s four airport walkway-esque magic carpets is to transport beginner skiers and boarders uphill. Ranging from 91 to 198 metres (299 to 650 feet) in length, Mount Washington Alpine Resort’s network of carpets is one of the largest in North America. Since they’ve only been open to the public since December 2011, you may have the distinction of being one of the first – if not the first – to get engaged on Feb. 29 while riding a magic carpet.
Some of the ski-and-stay deals being offered by many hotels in the Comox Valley region are package prices starting at CD$109.95 (per person, per night) and add-ons that include lift passes and hot breakfasts. Visit

While he’s wearing a skirt in Victoria, BC
If your man cries at all the right parts in Twilight, why not propose while he’s really getting in touch with his softer side, while wearing a skirt? (A kayak skirt, that is.) Ocean River Adventures has been a fixture of Victoria, BC – a West Coast kayaking mecca – for the past 30 years, giving lessons in watersports like kayaking and SUP (stand up paddle boarding) and leading adventure-seekers on expeditions through Vancouver Island waterways and to far-off destinations, such as the Scottish Hebrides.
Call Ocean River Adventures and book a private Victoria Harbour Urban Kayak Exploration Tour (day trips are generally available May through September, but private tours can be booked by request, year-round). While waiting for the perfect time to propose, you both will experience Victoria’s rich contrasts of city life and wildlife, getting unique perspectives of The Fairmont Empress, seaplanes and seals while learning about the city’s historic waterways. Bring some spending money and stop for celebratory toast over some of Victoria’s best fish and chips.
The Victoria Harbour Urban Exploration tour costs $75 per paddler. Visit

While riding a surboard in Tofino, BC
Ask him to be your one and only while riding a surfboard in Tofino, BC, a spot that’s earned the designation of being North America’s best surf town by
Outside
magazine.
Set in Cox Bay, just 7 km (4 miles) from Tofino, Long Beach Lodge Resort is one of the Canada’s top rated (and most romantic) destinations. Catering to adventurers and lovers of all types (from storm watchers and beachcombers to surfers and fishers), this property includes eight-acres of beachfront property, 41 lodge rooms and 20 cottages, a full-service dining room and lodge (called The Great Room) and a fitness facility. The resort also has its own on-site charter tour company, Private Marine Adventures, and Surf Club.
If you want to consider proposing and getting married within the same vacation, Long Beach Lodge Resort’s has an elopement package. For about CD$1,500, you’ll receive two nights in a deluxe beachfront room, a romantic dinner for two, a two-tiered wedding cake, breakfast in bed, a wedding favor and all the marriage essentials, from the venue to the commissioner and flowers. While navigating whitewater rapids in Turrialba, Costa Rica
Yes, love is a battlefield. So why prep him for a lifetime of marital bliss by heading to the Costa Rican mountains and proposing while navigating Class II and III rapids down the Pejibaye River?
A hotspot for whitewater rafting, the nearby Pacuare River even served as the hosting grounds for last year’s World Rafting Championship. Think of it this way: if he faints with surprise, at least he’ll be safely secured in a lifejacket.
To relax after the shock, settle in at Turrialba’s Hacienda Tayutic, a romantic and private boutique hotel that features just five guestrooms, a gourmet restaurant, a swimming pool and new spa; lush gardens and a macadamia nut, sugarcane and coffee plantation; and great views of the constantly rumbling and fuming Turrialba Volcano – Costa Rica’s most active volcano.
Rates start at $295 per night (low season; includes breakfast and snacks each day). Visit

Arrange your Leap Year proposal via a bungee jump into the Nanaimo River Canyon during WildPlay Element Parks’ one-day Unleash Your Leap Year sale.
To save $29 on the price of a regular bungee jump (save twice, if you go tandem), muster up your courage and call one of WildPlay’s Guest Service Agents on Feb. 29 to book the date and time you’ll take the plunge (offer is valid for regular jump times booked between March 1 through 29, 2012).

Women Proposing in Leap Year
I
f you didn't get an engagement ring on Valentine's Day and feel he is the right one, then on February 29th,
Leap Day
, tradition says -- women are “allowed” to propose marriage. With this chance coming only once every four years, you can plan your proposal to him. Here are some proposal tips
Don't think you're all alone - 9% of proposals are from women to men, Monica proposed to Chandler in
Friends
, and so did Miranda to Steve in
Sex and the
City
.
The key is to fall in love with the right person in the first place. If you really do want to propose, and you've known him longer than six months, and everything about him, and if he proposed to you, you would of said yes, then you know you're probably in the right place.
After you've figured out where you want to do this, perhaps at a memorable or romantic place where you both were together, now comes the proposal itself that you'll try to keep simple. Then the ring. Why not. Could be an engagement or wedding ring.
Don't get down on one knee if you're in stilettos or if you do plan your outfit so there are no surprises. Try not to give your plans away by showing how nervous you are.
A successful marriage proposal includes four elements: surprise. a positive memory, being meaningful, and receiving a "yes" to the marriage proposal. Good luck!
