KIDS
IN THE WEDDING PARTY

Remember the children can help the Bride and Groom on their special day by being on their best behaviour at all times. No tantrums and no tears. Lots of laughs and smiles!

The Bride may choose more than one Flower Girl. Sometimes it depends on the size of the wedding. Other times it's because there are several little sisters or cousins who want to be in the wedding party. Sometimes Flower Girls take the place of attendants. Usually they are under ten-years-old. However over three-years-old is suggested for kids in the Wedding Party, but it's the Bride's choice.

Flower Girls and Ring Bearers are also chosen because they lend a feeling of innocence to the procession and take cute pictures. But, kids are kids and you have to be prepared for anything to happen.

The Flower Girl
Traditionally the Flower Girl will either be carrying a basket filled with petals, herbs, flowers or a floral mixture that they will toss in the aisle in front of them (see Rehearsal section below) or a bouquet or flowers in their hair or a small bible with a flower and ribbons. Once the Bride has chosen the style, colours and theme of her wedding she will decide all of her flower requirements.

When the Bride and Groom have chosen their outfits it is time to go shopping for the Flower Girl's dress and Ring Bearer's outfit.

The Ring Bearer
In weddings of old, the young boy walks down the aisle beside the Flower Girl holding a fancy pillow with the couple's wedding wedding rings. Today usually the Best Man holds the real wedding bands for the Groom. To simulate the custom, attach fake rings to the pillow for the ring bearer to carry.

Flower Girl dresses that steal the show
Flower Girl's dresses come in a variety of color combinations and designs to help coordinate with the bride's theme and the party favors. Whether it’s an inside winter wonderland, a sunny summer outdoor occasion or a Valentine's Day wedding.

Flower Girl outfits on the runway
The Flower Girl's outfit is paid for by her family and should reflect the lines, styles and tones of the dresses chosen by the Bride and her attendants. The Flower Girl's dress is usually a full length formal or three-quarter semiformal length, pictured left. She may wear flower ornaments in her hair or a wreath depending on the theme of the wedding. As little girl's are growing all the time, make allowance that she can get more than one wearing out of the pretty dress with shoes to match, unless her outfit was a theme costume.

The Ring Bearer
The Ring Bearer's outfit is paid for by his family and can range from his best outfit, a theme costume, to a tuxedo. He usually wears a boutonniere like the groomsmen.


Parents can explain to their children the responsibilities and duties to participate in a Wedding Party. During the wedding, if an attendant is the parent of a Flower Girl or Ring Bearer, they should appoint someone to watch the child. Whoever is looking after the children should carry a comb, extra stockings (for the Flower Girl), tissues and whatever else might be needed.


DUTIES FOR THE FLOWER GIRL & RING BEARER

Engagement Party
Upon invitation, attend the engagement party if there is one.

Bridal Showers & Bachelor Parties
If the Flower Girl is invited to any of the bridal showers she can help by gathering the ribbons from the gifts the bride received and give them to an attendant. Ring Bearers are not invited to bachelor parties.

Bridal Luncheon
Upon invitation attend the luncheon hosted by the Bride's mother. This is often attended by the Ring Bearer as his mother is usually an attendant in the Wedding Party.

Rehearsal
Next to the wedding date the most important date for the Flower Girl and Ring Bearer to attend is the rehearsal. Remember, they probably have never done this before. The instructions should be said in a language they can understand.

The Flower Girl
If the Flower Girl is tossing petals or flowers in the aisle before the bride she'll need practice actually doing this. For the rehearsal use cut up paper the size of petals or if the budget allows some of the real petals. Remember to have someone responsible to clean up the 'rehearsal petals'  before you leave the area.


The Ring Bearer
The Ring Bearer will need practice carrying the pillow with the rings attached on them. He also needs to see what the Flower Girl will be doing, especially if she is going to be tossing petals, so that they can practice their presentation together.


Rehearsal Dinner
The children in the wedding party traditionally are not invited to the Rehearsal Dinner as it usually starts after 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.


Hair
Hair is usually done at the same place as the rest of the wedding party. The Bride and Groom decides if it is in a salon or at home.

Pictures
The children should be prepared to smile when they see a photographer, videographer or wedding guests with cameras. The official photographer for the wedding usually organizes the group photographs.


CEREMONY
· Arrival: go to the ceremony in the car that is planned.
· Checking Props: if the Flower Girl is throwing flower petals from a basket, check the basket before the processional to make sure everything is ok. If there is a Ring Bearer check the pillow and make sure the rings are pinned on tight.
· The Processional: the children usually walk in front of the bride, however it depends on the type of service.
· The Ceremony: the children stand with the attendants or take their place with their parents, usually placed in a front row, depending on their ages and the type of service.
· The Recessional: the children usually walk out behind the bride and groom however it varies with the type of service.

RECEPTION
· Receiving Line: the children in the Wedding Party usually don't participate in the receiving line unless requested by the Bride or Groom.
· Seating: the Bride and Groom and attendants usually sit at a head table that faces the guests. Children in the Wedding Party can either sit with their parents at separate tables unless the couple has arranged for them to sit at the head table.
· Dancing:  after the first dance ceremonies are over, the children can dance with whoever they want to including the Bride and Groom.
