WHEN YOU DECIDE TO ELOPE

Why American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler decided to elope
by Shelley Waugh

February 24, 2011 - Everything was set for country star Kellie Pickler and songwriter Kyle Jacobs' wedding in Nashville - the cake, the flowers, the gown - but instead she took her Badgley Mishka strapless ball gown, with the sweetheart neckline, pictured right, and beaded accents on the back of the tulle skirt, to a private Caribbean island and got married on the beach.

The newlywed country singer, Pickler, 24, said in an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that aired on February 24th, that she and Jacobs, were almost finished with the wedding planning except for the guest list - of which half of the people on the list she hated. They then realized, "this is not us,'" said Pickler.

So, she and Jacobs, 37, decided to elope to the private Jumby Bay resort in Antigua where they got married in the ocean surf at sunset on New Year's Day.

As the sun went down over the Caribbean, the bride-to-be stepped out of her beachside villa and waved to her waiting groom, who was standing on a sandbar ankle-deep in the sea beyond. But when her bare feet hit the sand, she began running "as fast as a girl in a wedding dress can go," recalls Jacobs who met her halfway. "She was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen - I gave her a big kiss before I was supposed to!"

With a first dance to a recording of Vince Gill's "Look at Us" and a seaside dinner for two, it was a storybook wedding day for a bride and groom. Pickler has declared "Our wedding was just us and God and our minister, and it was the most beautiful, sacred day of my life."

The couple were engaged in June 2010. Pickler finished in the Top Six of American Idol's fifth season, resulting in a near platinum-selling album and three CMA Awards to date.

Traditionally an elopement is a secret marriage that is legally binding like the quick wedding of Romeo & Juliet.
Today, the word elopement has almost been replaced by the honeymoon wedding where couples go to another destination to get married on their holiday.

Quite often, couples who elope do so for financial reasons or because of family resistance. Often they, or their parents, family or friends will have a reception when they return.

If you are planning to elope in your home town or city, make sure you follow the procedure in securing a marriage licence and make an appointment with an official who can marry you to check out any further information needed.

Las Vegas is known as one of the major places for elopement. But their licences do have rules and documentation requirements.
