TIPS FOR CHOOSING A CRUISE HONEYMOON
Many cruises offer discounts for spa services taken during port days

by Shelley Waugh
I
recently had an opportunity to ask travel expert Brian Simpson to name some of the best honeymoon cruises. He said, "Many people think of Hawaii and the Caribbean first, when considering a romantic cruise escape, but honeymooners tend to think bigger, and consider even more attractive and luxurious itineraries like the Mediterranean or Tahiti.

Cruises deliver on everything that honeymooning couples are looking for - romance, privacy, relaxation and the ability to do as little, or as much, as you’d like.

Of course, cruise lines are also known for fine dining, pampering in the spa, great nightlife and entertainment, and a wide variety of shore activity options.

Every cruise itinerary will include a few romantic “once-in-a-lifetime” shore options, such as wine and food tastings, or cultural entertainment events. But for more active couples, there’s plenty of exciting options like zip-lining, sea kayaking, bicycling and hiking.

Though most shore excursions are designed for larger groups, all cruise lines also offer smaller group experiences or even private tours. So be sure to speak to the Shore Excursion Desk when you board, or better yet, make your selections online before you leave. Ask when you are booking your cruise what savings you can book for shore excursions.

Today’s cruises offer a multitude of dining options, ranging from a burger by the pool to small tables for two in the main dining room.

For those looking for privacy, balcony staterooms are ideal. But upgrading to a concierge-type service or a suite is really the way to go. Imagine a romantic candlelit dinner for two under the stars on your own private balcony.

Generally speaking, the smaller, more intimate ships, which do not cater as much to families with kids, are best for romance. Holland America and Princess offer some smaller ships, but cruise lines such as Azamara, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn offer the best opportunity to get away from crowds and kids.

Smaller, more deluxe ships tend to sail to more exotic locales and can often access ports that some of the larger ships can’t. Larger ships have wonderful suites and concierge accommodations, speciality dining venues, and spa facilities, making it easy to create a romantic getaway from the crowds.

All cruise ships have good spa experiences, but generally speaking, the newer the ship, the fancier the spa. In fact, some rank among the best spas in the world, including spas on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty Of The Seas and Regent Seven Seas’ Seven Seas Voyager.

Several ships offer spa accommodations, which deliver enhanced in-room amenities and include special access to certain spa facilities. Celebrity’s Solstice class ships offer their new “AquaClass” rooms, and the newer Carnival and Holland America ships have spa staterooms and suites. The Seabourn ships (the three new ones) also have spa facilities.

Here’s a money-saving tip. Many cruise lines offer discounts for spa services taken during port days, when they’re traditionally quiet. So if you’re planning to stay on board, why not book a romantic couple’s massage and get a deal at the same time?

Cruising in the Mediterranean
A honeymoon is a trip of a lifetime

Having a honeymoon on a cruise is a good idea for romantic dinners, dancing under the stars, relaxation, comfort, well-being, and fun while you sail between beautiful ports and have an opportunity to share the discovery of different cultures and landscapes.

A shipline, MSC Cruises, currently has a fleet of eight ships cruising in the Mediterranean year round and seasonally in Northern Europe, Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and South America. The newest addition to the fleet, MSC Poesia, will transport on 7-night cruises to Greece, Turkey and Croatia. Check their website for updated information for cruises, stateroom availability (interior, oceanview, balcony), US rates, government fees and taxes, fuel surcharges, saving programs and additional restrictions that may apply.

MSC Cruises is a partner of the city of Venice and a member of the Club - ‘Friends of Venice’ as well as one of the supporters for the project ‘Venice Blue Flag,’ which sets the standards for the carbon emissions. For more information about MSC Cruises and its European honeymoons, visit www.msccruisesusa.com or a local travel professional. - SW
