EMILY BLUNTLOOK AT THE EMMYS
August 30, 2010
LOS ANGLES - Newlywed
Emily Blunt
, walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards with husband
John Krasinski
, in a lavender-coloured gown designed by
Dior
and hair designed by her long-time stylist,
Laini Reeves
, who also styled her hair for her recent wedding.
How Reeves created
a modern '20s look for Emily's shoulder length layered hair to compliment her dress.
1. After Reeves shampooed Emily's hair with repair shampoo to leave it soft, shiny and well-conditioned, she put in a mixture of intense curl cream and treatment and worked the blend from middle to ends of the hair to control ends and flyaways, and to provide a natural-looking, soft hold.
2. She then made a low side-part on the right, and pin-curled her hair in alternating patterns towards the left, and behind the right side. Emily's gown had a beaded accent on the right shoulder, so her hair was placed behind the ear to show this off. The pin-curls were in the classic way pinning three alternate rows of pin-curls (anti-clockwise/clockwise/anti-clockwise).
3. Her wet hair was then mist with glimmer shine spray and let air-dry for one hour while make-up was applied. A hairdryer was not used (so the waves would look softer yet controlled when they were brushed).
4. Once her hair was air-dried, Reeves released the pin-curls and raked her fingers through the hair. She used a panel brush to keep the hair flat to the head so it wouldn't disturb the root movement of the wave, and gently brushed from part to ends so that hair fell into a lovely wave.
5. Finally, she shaped and styled the flow of the look and framed the left side of Emily’s face with a cascade of waves (inserting a hidden pair pin to hold it in place). To accent the look, she attached a diamond accessory in the hair above the right ear by crossing two bobby pins, that were clipped on an earring, and sewed in with silver thread. To shorten the look a bit, she created a pin-curled, textured effect at the nape of the neck.
Reeves finished the '20s look with a quick mist of argan oil-infused hairspray to give the hair a hold without compromising on softness, movement or shine.

TAYLOR SWIFT & CARRIE UNDERWOOD LOOKS AT CMA
November 11, 2009
Creative Director,
Michael Shaun Corby
created a fun
and feminine updo that perfectly complemented Taylor's sparkly gown on the red-carpet at the
Country Music Awards
(Nov. 11, 2009, ABC-TV), with her loose curls that fell along her face.
•
Work a small amount of hemp shine into damp, freshly washed hair for smooth, soft, weightless volume and create a side part.
• Blow-dry hair with a round brush.
• Lightly spray the entire head of hair
• Use a small-barrel curling iron to create ringlet curls throughout the hair from mid-shaft to the ends, spraying each curl with hair spray to maintain the shape.
• Coat fingers lightly in shaping balm, and use fingers to lightly separate the curls and add texture with the balm.
• Pin up the hair by rolling the ends under for a ‘faux bob’ effect and pinning to secure. Make sure to leave some loose curled strands to fall along the face.
• Finish with a light spray of hair spray and hemp with organics for a brilliant sheen.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD
Carrie glowed on the red carpet
and on camera when she and
Brad Paisley
hosted the CMA event. Her look was romantic, polished, and ultra-glamorous.
• Work a volumizing styling lotion into damp, freshly washed hair with thickening compound and create a side part.
• Blow-dry hair with a round brush to achieve volume, especially at the roots.
• Back-comb the top back portion of the hair lightly and carefully to get volume at the top of the head.
• Lightly spray the entire head of hair hair spray.
• Use a wide-barrel curling iron to curl sections of the hair from mid-shaft to the ends, spraying each curl hair spray after it’s been curled, to maintain the shape.
• Pin back a small amount of hair from the sides, securing just below the back-combed section and pushing it up and back slightly to get extra height.
• Use fingers to lightly separate the curls to add some texture
• Finish with a light spray for a brilliant sheen.

ANGELINA JOLIE'S OSCAR HAIR TIPS
2009 Oscar Awards
California celebrity hairstylist
David Babaii
created a romantic cascade of curls for Angelina Jolie
when she attended the
2009 Oscar Awards
.
The look has four main signature stages: drying, sectioning, curling and styling.
Steps to achieve this style:
• Angelina's entire head was sprayed and scrunched itinto the hair for texture and hold;
• Next, he dried her hair by dividing her tresses into three sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Taking small sections starting at the nape, he used a blow dryer with the nozzle attachment and finished the drying process with a large round brush to smooth hair straight;
• At the crown area, he sprayed ash root amplifier to the root area and down the hair shaft. Then, he dried this section with a jumbo round brush to add lift and volume. Once dry, he sectioned the hair again using the same sectioning process as he did for blow drying;
• Using a styling iron he once again sectioned the hair into three sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free;
• To curl, he used a styling iron to create "ribbon curls" by taking small "V" shaped sections. To achieve, wrap the hair around and inside the styling iron close to the scalp area and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon). After curling the entire head, he smoothed some of the curls with a brush while leaving some intact;
• At the crown area, he back-brushed the hair at the scalp area only, sprayed some additional volcanic root amplifier and gently smoothed the surface not to remove too much of the back-brushing;
• Next, to create her half-up, half-down look, he brushed the sides up and back and secured with pins;
• To complete the back, he ran his fingers up several curls to create volume and variations in texture. For a long but natural lasting hold, he used light styling spray.
• David Babaii's styling tip: Sectioning is vital to have constant control of your hair at all times so that you will never miss an area or a section.

FOR SIDE-SWEPT UPDO
2009 Golden Globe Awards
Hair stylist
Suki Duggan
, owner of Manhattan’s Donsuki Townhouse Salon is renowned for recreating red carpet hairstyles and has made a list of easy, do-it-yourself tips to create
Kate Winsle
t’s, left, textured side-swept updo when she attended the 2009
Golden Globe Awards
.
Textured Side-Swept Updo:
1. Wash your hair with shampoo and a little bit of conditioner. If your hair is too conditioned, it can be hard to get a textured look after you dry it.
2. Add a bit of volume-enhancing product, such as mousse to slightly damp hair. Blow dry hair upside-down and run your fingers through it to create wavy texture.
3. Brush out a bang section and secure back with two bobby pins. Loosen a bit with your fingers by tugging at the hairline.
4. Gather hair and split from ear to ear so there's an upper section and a lower section then, with that lower section, take two smaller sections and tie into a large knot and secure it with bobby pins.
5. Rub a dollop of smoothing serum into your palms and tame flyaway strands with your fingers.
6. Spray your updo with a light mist of hairspray to set.
Sleek Parted Low Buns:
1. Make a deep middle or side part and apply shine serum, getting rid of all the flyaways.
2. Then gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure with hair elastic.
3. Wrap the ponytail into a bun and then secure with bobby pins to bun in place.
4. Spray your bun with a light mist of hairspray to set.
