THE GROOMS' LIBRARY
Picks with Anthony Verombeck

Groom's Guide, by Peter van Dijk, first congratulations you on your engagement, and then welcomes you to a world for which you are sadly ill-equipped. You have entered a new dimension. A dimension of china patterns, ice swans, and boutonnieres. You're planning a wedding, and your fiancee expects more from you than a diamond ring. And far more than you should ever rightly know about weddings.

There are some very good tips in the book such as: Choosing your best man and his duties including getting you to the church on time; your wedding outfit and why it will take several turns; why engagements of over two years are justified only by extended commitments to the armed forces and/or unusually long jail sentences; how to pick groomsmen gifts and groomsmen who almost deserve them; the prenuptial celebrations including your bachelor party - as if you haven't heard enough about this already.

Among other writing credits and receiving advertising industry awards, author Peter van Dijk is a battle-scarred veteran of a joyful wedding in Ogunquit, Maine.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BEST MAN
There's classic advice in The Little Giant Encyclopedia of Wedding Etiquette that covers just about all you need to get ready for your wedding. To help you decide on your best man, this book spells out his duties. Here is a partial list of his responsibilities to help you choose. The right choice makes all the difference in the world, especially on your wedding day.

Pre-wedding responsibilities include: Attend all festivities that the groom is invited to, including rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Make certain the grooms wedding attire is picked up and ready to wear. Organize and host the bachelor party.

Wedding day: Get the groom to the ceremony site on time. Hold the ring to be given to the bride, unless there is a ring- bearer. Stand next to the groom in the ceremony. Escort the maid/matron of honor down the aisle during the recessional. Make certain the bride and groom are transported to the reception site. Sign the marriage certificate (if over 18). Help whoever is distributing cheques to service providers. Make the first toast to the new couple at the reception. Make certain the bride and room are safely delivered to their get-away transportation after the reception. Return the groom's attire if rented, or keep the groom's personally owned attire safe until his return. Organize the return of all groomsmen's rented formal wear. With maid/matron of honor, see that all wedding gifts safely arrive at predetermined locations.
