BEAUTY: Skincare

Stress can make your skin look lifeless.

by Shelley Waugh

T

here is a special glow that makes every bride beautiful. If the cosmetic business could bottle it, they would. However, cosmetics do help most brides look their best for the wedding day.

Throughout your engagement, maintain your beauty regime. Keep your face clean, get or give yourself facials once a month, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Stress can make your skin look lifeless.

The style of makeup you choose should bring out the best in your face and enhance your personality. Decide which look you want - glamorous, pretty or natural. If you are planning to hire makeup and/or hair services, remember to include those quotes in your wedding binder to compare prices along the way.

Skin care & Make-up
If you don't already have a skin care program, this is the perfect time to go on one. You have to know your skin type in order to choose the right cleansing products and to protect your skin from the weather. Your diet has to be right for you to maintain good skin.

If you are going to hire a makeup specialist for your wedding, give yourself plenty of time to shop for one who you feel comfortable with. Many salons offer both makeup and hair services in their shops. Freelance makeup artists and some shop specialists will go to your home.

If you are going to be doing your own makeup, practice on the look you want to create. Don't experiment on your wedding day with new products or looks.

If you want a romantic fairy-tale soft look, do not wear too much makeup. Heavy mascara makes the eyes seem too dark and will spoil the fresh look. (However, remember to use waterproof mascara for those tears).

RECOMMENDATIONS TO AVOID AGING SUN DAMAGE

by Shelley Waugh
Despite years of warnings by experts about the risks posed by exposure to UVA and UVB rays, a new national survey in the United States on sunscreen use shows that nearly one-third (30%) of adults (18 and over) report not using sunscreen at all, while 71% of those who do use sunscreen don't apply it until after already being out in the sun, having reached their outdoor destination.

Most sunscreens work by reacting chemically with the skin, so they don't start absorbing damaging rays immediately and should be applied generously at least 20 minutes before going outside to reach maximum protection.

Pre-applying sunscreen before leaving home or your hotel room is the proper thing to do because the typical sunscreen product, whether cream, gel or spray, needs about 20 to 30 minutes on the skin to absorb to its best protection potential. Putting it on before you dress enables you to apply it evenly and not miss any spots.

All skin types need to be vigilant about sun protection, even those who tan easily and rarely burn. Although a suntan is not painful like sunburn, it too is a sign of skin damage that can lead to skin cancer and premature aging.

In addition to taking the proper precautions to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays, you should get regular skin cancer screenings to look for abnormalities before they turn into something more serious. Whenever in doubt, a doctor should examine the skin, since skin cancer, even melanoma, can be completely curable when diagnosed in the early stages.
