CABARET'S SCENE CHANGES REFRESHING AND NOT MOTORIZED
RUNNING TO OCTOBER 25,
Avon Theatre in Stratford

Review by Frances Greenwood
From the moment the “Emcee” enters onto the stage of this atmospheric production of Cabaret (the air in the theatre seems smoky and heavy) you are drawn into the era and it is Berlin in 1929 when the country is morally floundering and suspect political undercurrents are slowly creeping upward into society. This is visual decadence, and for some in the audience maybe shocking and too provocative.

This is not the Cabaret of Liza Minnelli this is the socially consciencious Cabaret that grabs and pushes into your face the immoral anything goes characters that inhabit the Kit-Kat Klub spinning out of control backed against the seeming normality of Fräulein Schneider’s reality of survival. .... click here to read complete review/

GETTING MARRIED
by Bernard Shaw
Running to November 1, Royal George Theatre, Shaw Festival
The bishop’s daughter is getting married today. Or at least she was until she and her groom begin to have their doubts. They’ve each received a pamphlet titled “Do You Know What You Are Going to Do? By A Woman Who Has Done It“ and they both begin to question whether marriage is any kind of sensible union. When the groom also begins expressing his doubts about the marriage, this sparks a full-scale debate amongst the wedding guests about marriage and divorce. They eventually decide to try and draw up the ideal marriage contract: can they agree on the perfect marriage laws? Will the happy couple finally marry? Or will the institution of marriage be rejected by all? Soon the whole household – from the bishop to the green grocer – has an opinion to share. A witty, provocative and thoroughly modern look at this venerable institution.
Getting Married, directed by Joseph Ziegler, The Shaw Festival is located in the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, at the northern end of the scenic Niagara Parkway. For information please call the Box Office 1.800.511.SHAW (7429) or visit  www.shawfest.com
